Bilingual Education In The Classroom

Last spring, 9-year-old Derrick Fields sat in his social studies classroom at Sherman Elementary School, learning about the creation of the telegraph. This critically important ruling and the radical change of direction in California’s education policy for limited-English children will have a prfound effect on other states’ programs and, possibly, on legislative actions. The district currently has four pathway programs” to teach English learners, bilingual students and English-speaking students from pre-K to 12th grade. Advocates of bilingual education support the restructuring changes, but, in addition, want individuals involved in the restructuring process to understand and support the goals of bilingual education. The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America.
