An advisor in the education department will be assigned upon the student’s admission to a teacher education program, though the primary advisor resides in the major department. ISCED 2011 distinguishes nine levels of education: early childhood education (level 0); primary education (level 1); lower secondary education (level 2); upper secondary education (level 3); post-secondary non-tertiary education (level 4); short-cycle tertiary education (level 5); bachelor’s or equivalent level (level 6); master’s or equivalent level (level 7); doctoral or equivalent level (level 8). The first results based on ISCED 2011 have been published in 2015.

General Secondary Education

The field of education is the only profession that trains those who will serve in all other professions. Among the six non-member countries shown in Table 1, only Iceland and Turkey reported a majority of upper secondary pupils following general programmes. The student is responsible for knowing and meeting the requirements and deadlines for internship, program completion and certification, as well as all graduation requirements of the major department and of the University. During this course, students prepare and present their professional portfolios, hone their interviewing skills and complete necessary certification and job applications. This capstone course for education majors is taken in conjunction with student teaching. Based on PSLE results, students apply and are sorted into secondary schools for a 4 or 5-year course.

The Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) provides information on what federal educational aid is available and which federal laws provide educational rights.
