A board of education, school committee or school board is the board of directors or board of trustees of a school, local school district or higher administrative level. Teachers and other employees who did not have to work hard to get their jobs often times do not feel the need to work hard to defend their jobs. The Education Committee, chaired by Deb McCann assists in setting educational policies and in guiding district curriculum and programs. The civil service system has been used since 1883 to award government jobs to the best qualified candidates.
The Negotiations Committee, chaired by Board President David Dietze works with the Superintendent, director of human resources, business administrator, and the school district’s attorneys to reach equitable contracts with the two labor unions represented in the district.
Teachers are constantly plagued by the worry that the state or federal government may reduce financial aid to their respective districts requiring the district to make staffing cuts. Superintendent Dawson of Camden New Jersey was found to have had seven relatives on the district payroll when the state of New Jersey audited the district back in 1996 (Pristin, 1996). At workshop meetings, Board members review matters outlined on the agenda and hear reports from the superintendent and the board committees. Board of Education (BOE) is the policy-making body for the Buffalo Public Schools.
We believe that all parents must be empowered to play an active role in their students’ education. The board agenda allows for public comments on items on the agenda and items not on the agenda. The State Board adopts the administrative code, which sets the rules needed to implement state education law. Summit Board of Education meetings are an ideal opportunity for the public to see its Board at work, discussing issues, and making decisions that set the course for the Summit Public Schools. The Board of Education’s Finance Committee meets quarterly and the board’s Property Committee meets as needed.
The case that came to be known as Brown v. Board of Education was actually the name given to five separate cases that were heard by the U.S. Supreme Court concerning the issue of segregation in public schools. Board members may also be reimbursed for expenses incurred for approved Board related activities. The budget, which is submitted to the Board of School Estimate for approval, is the result of months of preparation and is based on the board of education’s established priorities.
