The learning needs of adults are unique due to career demands, family commitments, and life experiences which affect how they learn. The Kentucky Office of Employment and Training estimates that by 2020, some form of postsecondary education will be required for 29 percent of all jobs and 62 percent of all jobs in Kentucky. Olympic Adult Education (OAE) was founded after identifying a need to address the deficiencies in literacy and basic education for the many educationally disadvantaged adults in the local community. Established in 1946, it is one of the nation’s oldest adult education programs.
Adult Basic Education and Literacy Option: Coursework is focused on teaching and research in ABE and literacy with electives in distance education, administration, and theory. The Fort Smith Adult Education Center offers a wide range of classes that are available to any adult over the age of 18 who is a resident of the area. As practitioners, their real-world experience influenced their approach to skill training and educational program planning.
Because the abstractions governing the user’s interactions with a PC were so new, many people who had been working white-collar jobs for ten years or more eventually took such training courses, either at their own whim (to gain computer skills and thus earn higher pay) or at the behest of their managers.
This practitioner-oriented master’s degree prepares individuals interested in working with adult learners in a variety of fields, including but not limited to continuing professional education, corporate training and development, postsecondary education, government, non-profit organizations, human services, the military, and adult basic education.
Emphasizes the importance of designing programs around the needs and problems of the school and community; considers economic, social, political characteristics of communities; methods of assessment, communication, involvement, and conflict resolution.
