The field of education is the only profession that trains those who will serve in all other professions. Among the six non-member countries shown in Table 1, only Iceland and Turkey reported a majority of upper secondary pupils following general programmes. The student is responsible for knowing and meeting the requirements and deadlines for internship, program completion and certification, as well as all graduation requirements of the major department and of the University. During this course, students prepare and present their professional portfolios, hone their interviewing skills and complete necessary certification and job applications. This capstone course for education majors is taken in conjunction with student teaching. Based on PSLE results, students apply and are sorted into secondary schools for a 4 or 5-year course.
Students sit for a standardised test at the end of both stages; Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) for Lower Secondary, and Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM, equivalent to the -Level examination) for Upper Secondary. After your first semester at SLU, you can apply to major in education without pursuing teaching certification. All students who matriculate into the professional licensure program must have a major in an approved content area.
In most of the EU Member States expenditure on upper secondary education exceeded that on lower secondary education in 2012, although there were six exceptions among the 24 for which data are available: France, Portugal, Austria, the Netherlands, Germany and Lithuania.
The vocational course is a one-year programme provided to upper secondary school students who, for various reasons, do not want to continue their education. After completing leaving exam course, they take the leaving examination, which makes the eligible for university education. Since 2015, the Ministry of Education has started an experimental program to merge the Graduation Exam and University Entrance exam into one. The degree is recognised nationally and internationally for those who aspire to teach students aged twelve to eighteen in public and private schools.
