The Department of Mathematics (D-MATH) at the ETH Zurich conducts high level research in most areas of pure and applied mathematics. There are three undergraduate programs that lead to the degree Bachelor’s of Science in Mathematics: a General Mathematics Option, an Applied Mathematics Option for those who wish to specialize in that aspect of mathematics, and a Theoretical Mathematics Option for those who expect to pursue graduate work in pure mathematics.
The study of space originates with geometry – in particular, Euclidean geometry , which combines space and numbers, and encompasses the well-known Pythagorean theorem Trigonometry is the branch of mathematics that deals with relationships between the sides and the angles of triangles and with the trigonometric functions.
By reading the letters and symbols only, one cannot associate the formula with particular vocabulary words or even the purpose of the formula. Professors Mason Porter and Andrea Bertozzi of the Department of Mathematics have been named Fellows of the American Physical Society (APS). The choice of what to include and exclude is my own personal one, so please forgive me if your favourite mathematician is not included or not dealt with in any detail. In 2003, U.S. performance in mathematics literacy and problem solving was lower than the average performance for most OECD (Organization for Education and Cooperative Development) countries.
Encyclopaedia of Mathematics online encyclopaedia from Springer , Graduate-level reference work with over 8,000 entries, illuminating nearly 50,000 notions in mathematics. Some say that the student who ignores God as he does mathematical tasks is not neutral, but even rebellious and ungrateful toward the Giver of all his knowledge (Proverbs 3:6;Hosea 4:6). Professor Auckly was the co-founder and is co-director of the Navajo Nation Math Circles Project.
A full profile of Professor Korten can be found on the site [email protected] and Hispanic in the Mathematical Sciences , which featured one mathematician of hispanic heritage per day for a month, starting on September 15. The article on Professor Korten, featured on September 26, recounts the remarkable path that took Marianne from a childhood spent in a remote part of Patagonia, to the capital of Argentina Buenos Aires, to Europe, and eventually to Kansas State.
