The mission of the Howard County Board of Education (BOE) is to provide leadership for excellence in teaching and learning by fostering a climate for deliberative change through policy and community engagement. For the purposes of federal law, the State Board of Education also serves as the State Board for Vocational and Technological Education.
We believe that all parents must be empowered to play an active role in their students’ education. The board agenda allows for public comments on items on the agenda and items not on the agenda. The State Board adopts the administrative code, which sets the rules needed to implement state education law. Summit Board of Education meetings are an ideal opportunity for the public to see its Board at work, discussing issues, and making decisions that set the course for the Summit Public Schools. The Board of Education’s Finance Committee meets quarterly and the board’s Property Committee meets as needed.
Education is regulated on a state and local level and problems with district hiring practices can be dealt with by concerned members of the public seeking out their elected representatives and pressuring them to attend to the matter promptly. Regular Meetings: On the third Thursday of each month, again with the exception of August, the Board convenes in regular meetings, which are held in Summit High School’s Media Center. They include a local superintendent appointed by the Governor, the NC Principal of the Year, the Raleigh Dingman award winner (local board member), two NC Teachers of the Year (each serving a two-year term), and two high school students (a high school junior and a high school senior, each serving a two-year term beginning in the junior year).
If it is found that nepotism is a problem in the district than pressure can be put on the board of education to address the unfair hiring practices. The Clarke County Board of Education holds its regular monthly meeting on the second Thursday of each month. In addition to aforementioned meetings, the Board of Education’s Policy Committee meets once a month. McLaurin employed Thurgood Marshall and the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund to argue his case, a case which eventually went to the U.S. Supreme Court. The Board is empowered to purchase, rent or improve sites for schools and to construct, rent, or improve school facilities.
